Author: Emilio Pasquini e Guido Favati. Introduction of Ilaria Gasperi
"Amor ch'a nullo amato amar perdona": we all know it, or have heard it or have declaimed it at least once in their life: the famous verse 103 of Canto V of the Inferno of the Divine Comedy... perhaps the most famous of the entire work and of Italian literature in general? A symbol par excellence of love, those words uttered by Francesca da Rimini, to whom the Song is almost entirely dedicated. They contain the meaning and the intrinsic contradiction of a feeling which causes irrepressible joy and unspeakable pain together, something that the great poet was able to describe in an unparalleled way. Key term of the Stilnovo, and at the centre of Dante's language, love is explored in detail in these pages, dense in its articulated evolution and in the most diverse declinations within Dante's production: it runs through the Vita Nuova, plays the role of the gentle woman-philosopher in the Convivio, and then explodes in an expressionistic crescendo in the Rhymes until she grafts herself into the Divine Comedy in a stream of masterful breath. The text is introduced by the reflections of Ilaria Gaspari, who dedicated a large part of her production to the sentimental universe.
