Devised in 1925 and begun for the first time in 1960, the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani ends in this very year, 2020, with its fiftieth volume. This last tome will bring to completion the initial project of a national biography reconstructed through more than forty thousand biographies of Italians who contributed to the artistic, cultural, political, scientific, religious, literary and economic History of the country from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the present day. Directed by a prestigious équipe, this monumental endeavour, unique in its kind, includes entries signed by the best national and international experts, subject to rigorous research, always supported by bibliography source indications, and arranged in alphabetical order. Next to the major ones, from Dante Alighieri to Camillo Benso conte di Cavour, from Francesco Petrarca to Giuseppe Verdi, from Giotto to Raffaello and Michelangelo, Luchino Visconti and Eleonora Duse, there are the many less known, sometimes 'discovered' by researchers. In recent years, an increasing amount of attention has been paid to female characters.
