Continuing the editorial line already launched by the Enciclopedia Italiana con l’Orlando Furioso nello specchio delle immagini (Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia, with Orlando Furioso in the mirror of images), this book intends to offer a rich visual documentation of how the Divine Comedy was illustrated, proposing a precise critical perspective: repeatedly analysing the link between text and image, i.e. showing how the image is a way of interpreting the text, thus influencing and guiding the reader’s reactions.
But at the same time, the intention is also to document how the images express the different sensibilities of different times and help to create that collective memory of the poem which is a huge part of the national imagination and identity, as well as of the image of Italy seen from abroad. So, the European and worldwide view of the Divine Comedy will also be represented.
Obviously, the goal is not to offer complete documentation, which tends to be exhaustive, the idea is to focus on certain significant examples, and at the same time offer a map that allows people to orient themselves in the chronology and in its different types of images.
