Andreas Cellarius
Atlas Coelistis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica
The fascinating and mysterious celestial vault in the darkness of night, the alternating motions of the Moon and Sun, the circular motions of the stars and the way they are aligned, forming familiar, recognisable shapes: mankind has always been drawn to the sky and to explore its wonders. A realm of supernatural beings, but also a place of scientific research into the eternal laws of nature. The star atlas by the German astronomer and mathematician Andreas Cellarius, published in the Netherlands by Jan Jansson in 1660, is a testament to the advances in cosmology, with large etched, hand-coloured plates. It includes all the celestial systems known to exist at the time, from the Ptolemaic system, dating back to the second century AD, to the Copernican system and that of Tycho Brahe and his pupil Kepler. It depicts the constellations, both the classical ones featuring mythical figures and the ‘modern’ ones that were studied following the great voyages of discovery in the Southern Hemisphere.

Four plates chosen from the 1661 edition of the Atlas Coelestis by Cellarius kept at the National Central Library of Rome, reproduced in facsimile by the Officina Carte Valori del Poligrafico dello Stato (Security Printing Works of the State Mint and Polygraphic Institute) on special paper for art prints, in nine colours and with hot stamped gold retouching. Each plate measures 59x48 cm. The plates, which are carefully folded, are stored in an elegant slipcase (measuring 31x52 cm). A commentary detailing the history of the Atlas, with a comprehensive description of the iconography of the plates, is also included. Limited edition.
This collection consists of a set of four plates that Cellarius refers to as ‘scenographies’ to highlight their innovative perspective view. Depicted as a globe, the Earth appears as if seen from a far-off place in outer space, through the transparent sphere of the heavens. In addition to the 48 Ptolemaic constellations, which also include the Zodiac constellations, there are 12 new ones that were introduced following sightings in the Southern Hemisphere during voyages of discovery in the late 16th century.
