Facsimile reproduction of the Pluteus (or Plut) manuscript 6.23. Preserved in the Laurentian Library of Florence, this 11th-12th century evangeliary, has a systematic illustrative apparatus: the 237 sheets contain 285 small illustrations which accompany the Gospel narrations, ensuring that the written text constantly alternates with the illustrations that depict it. Each of the four Gospels is preceded by a splendid full-page depiction of the respective evangelist on a gold background. As Tania Velmans describes it in her essay published in the volume which accompanies the facsimile, this is "an almost unique work in terms of the abundance of its illustrations, its fidelity to the Evangelists’ texts and its achievement in retelling the Gospel story almost entirely through images.” An introductory essay by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi is also included in the Commentary.
