The volume collects the entries written for the Italian Encyclopaedia by Federigo Enriques, one of the founders of the Italian school of algebraic geometry and one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century. Many of the most important themes of the theoretical and practical battle of the first two decades of this century appear in these texts: the cognitive value of mathematical knowledge; the intertwining of mathematics and philosophy in the great voices of the history of thought, from the Pythagoreans to Plato, from Descartes to Leibniz, from Kant to Einstein; the themes of definition and infinity; the logic of scientific procedures; the Italian scientific tradition, from medieval mathematicians to the algebrists of the Renaissance, from the Galilean school to the studies of geometry; finally, the contemporary debate, from non-Euclidean geometries to post-Newtonian dynamics.
