2021 marks the seventh centenary of Dante Alighieri's death.  Exactly one hundred years ago, in 1921, studies on Dante were revolutionised by Benedetto Croce's book La poesia di Dante. The story of the great poet's journey through the twentieth century begins from this threshold, which is still significant today. Reconstructing the debates and criticisms connected with Dante in the last century, intertwined with political and ideological discussions between multiple positions and fronts, this book – composed of three interconnected essays – sets out to broaden the field of celebrations and the fervent debate between philology and aesthetic criticism, analysing a deep key moment of Italian culture. But above all, the book intends to suggest a profound question: how come Dante survives his critics, the arid scholastic exercises and unending academic polemics? If one thinks of it, the vitality of secular imaginary seems to grow and feed on new meanings, new allegories and new questions.
