Critical interpretations of Marxist thought and its powerful ability not only to explain but also to direct history, has been central in Italy, as elsewhere. Moulding cultural and political reflection in the course of over a century, dialectically intersecting with the events of Italy: from the Unification of Italy to the origin of the workers' movement, to the Fascist period, to the birth of the Republic, to the movements of the Sixties and Seventies, up to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Italian Communist Party. These reflections have dominated more than a generation of thinkers and politicians, both Marxists and liberals, influencing the figure of the politically committed intellectual – a participant intellectual, not a mere observer of reality – and helping to define their role in society. Giuseppe Vacca, who was an important protagonist of that season, critically reconstructs this debate with passion, in depth and in all its richness and variety. This means retracing the thinking of the major figures who took part in it, from Labriola and Spaventa to Gentile and Croce, from Gramsci and Togliatti to Garin and Bobbio, and up to the most recent reflections by Biagio de Giovanni, which lead us beyond the twentieth century
