Author: Hillman, James. With an essay by Silvia Ronchey

"Call the world, if you please "the Vale of Soul Making"": these words of the poet John Keats inspired James Hillman when, in the nineteen-seventies, he revolutionised the dogmas of Jungian psychology and psychotherapy with his "archetypal psychology". He defined this as a "cultural movement", a "re-animation" of analytical psychology intended to go beyond the sphere of clinical studies and scientific models, and to place itself more broadly in the wake of the culture of Western imagination, weaving links with the arts and the history of society. But unlike the main psychologies of the twentieth century, which have their roots in Northern Europe – the German language and the Jewish and Protestant monotheistic Weltanschauung – Hillman's revision originates in the South, in that Mediterranean ethos which, in addition to being a geographical, cultural and ethnic place, is also a symbolic place. It has its own images and references, its sensual and concrete humanity, its gods and their myths, whose metaphors are the prime expressive vehicles of archetypes, the primordial and irreducible forms of the psyche.
