Author: Le Goff, Jacques. With an essay by Francesco Mores.

The History of Ideas was born in the United States around the 1940s, powered by the studies of the American philosopher Arthur Oncken Lovejoy, who considered it an autonomous discipline, distinct from the history of philosophy and focused on the concept of process and development as continuous mutation. Lovejoy's writings form the starting point of the reflections of Jacques Le Goff who, with the clarity of the educator and a seductive prose, retraces the various phases that contributed to the acceptance of the History of Ideas in Europe, and its consequences in terms of social and political processes. His investigation demonstrates how the history of ideas has enabled humanity to find a way out of the rigid constraints of history, which can still somehow be influenced thanks to political awareness and consequent action.
