After the Glory of the Incarnation, Mission and Exile alternated in the perception of Christian belief in Western Europe, echoing David’s Psalm 39: “I dwell with you as a foreigner, a pilgrim, as all my ancestors were”... from Dante’s mysterious “ramogna” to don Milani’s solitude in Barbiano. However, this devotion has not been widespread and, as Rilke urges, it is necessary that God "tear himself" from the quadrants of the cathedrals so that the people remember the journey. The book covers the stations, century by century, of this difficult journey, up to the recent burning of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
