We live in a world immersed in a global infrastructure, defined no longer only by the physical networks dedicated to transport and public services, but also by the system of replicable standards, ideas and formulas that govern our life spaces. Easterling introduces us to the concept of “extrastatecraft”, a portmanteau word describing places and activities that operate outside traditional government practices. This is part of her analysis of the nature of today's infrastructure: from the recent extra-urban enclaves such as Dubai and Mumbai to global broadband networks changing the essence of the African continent, and including the authentic extra-state parliament that is the ISO organisation, creator of standard regulations on a global scale. She photographs the features of a planet where infrastructures have become points of access and contact for every one of us: an infrastructural space.
