Tratto da Europa - Based on Europe. Cultures and society – a work published by Treccani which analyses various aspects of the societies and cultures that have contributed to enabling the Union of nations only recently emerged from numerous fratricidal wars – this volume offers an overview of the new and traditional religious values that characterise the different areas of today's Europe. The most important traditional faiths of the European religious heritage – Roman and Orthodox Catholicism, Judaism and Protestantism – are examined in their fundamental elements, but a new religious geography is also outlined, with the emergence of European Islam and its factions during a difficult process of immigration. The modernisation and industrialisation that have taken place during the history of the European Union has also generated an accelerated process of secularisation which distinguishes these territories and these cultures from other developed geographical areas, together with the United States, making them, according to some interpretations, "an exceptional case."
