Il Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (Biographical Dictionary of Italians) is the largest national biography presently in existence. This is a colossal work which illustrates the life and works of Italians and Italianised people who – from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the present day – have left a mark on the artistic, cultural, political, religious, scientific and social history of Italy.
It covers the life and works of historical protagonists, but also of many ‘minor’ figures often ignored by far-reaching historical texts. For this reason, as well as famous artists, writers, politicians and scientists, the pages of this Dictionary also contain artisans, bankers, journalists, merchants, notaries, printers and all those men and women who have contributed to Italian culture and history.
Thanks to scrupulous research in archives and documents from all over the world, each biography briefly describes the person’s life story, and critically assesses their works and their relationship with the context of their time.
