Ettore Spalletti, a great interpreter of post-war international art history, creator of great monochromes, conceived this great idea: "to paint" the Great Encyclopedia Treccani with his famous blue.
The most comprehensive source of knowledge, the Treccani Encyclopedia, enhanced by the artist's favorite theme: his very personal blue color. The irreplaceable gift of culture is brought into an immersive dimension. A natural choice for Spalletti who considered blue, precisely, an atmospheric color, which does not exist as a surface but which lives in space.
This operation does not disregard the multiple conceptual implications that Treccani expresses but, on the contrary, implies a defined and fascinating interpretation of the different aesthetic-institutional purposes which, more or less explicitly, this creation assumes: the historical Encyclopedia Italian, with its undisputed authority, combines with the contemplative functionality of the line designed by the master Ettore Spalletti. An imaginative peak that reveals itself as unique in the precious Italian cultural heritage.
For Spalletti the word abstraction did not explain his work, it moved away from it. He himself said that his work was the result of the observation of natural reality reduced to the essential.
Color as thickened, distilled light: natural light and naturally other light at the same time.
No person of culture can resist the charm of the idea of an "encyclopedia", that is, the more or less extensive exposure, in book format, of human knowledge: a summa linked to the need to preserve and pass on the knowledge that is embedded here , in the artistic vision of a great master.
The cover design maintains the classic values of symmetry. The background uses the unmistakable blue color that Spalletti has raised to an almost sacred, luminous and solemn level at the same time.
The writings on the plate printed in hot gold, as well as on the back, characterize the identity of the prestigious work. The back, in particular, exemplifies in the graphics, elegant and essential, the attempt that the artist intended to make in his vision, namely the lack of gravity of the material support, a suspension of time that tends to eternity.
On the flyleaf pages, the Master has imprinted an essential but dense form of conceptual tension, also enhanced by the use of hot gold.
The Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia founded by Giovanni Treccani chose Maestro Ettore Spalletti to reinterpret the image of the Encyclopedia on the outside of the volumes to enhance their aesthetic perfection.
The meeting with Treccani appears coherent and perfect continuity with the artistic and personal history of the Master. The culture conveyed not only in the contents, but also communicated through the consistency and aesthetics of the volumes as real objects of value. The volumes, therefore, are simultaneously tools and forms of art, highly symbolic, which transmit prestige and knowledge.
The work, in a limited and numbered edition, was created based on the artist's design.
