For over a century, Karl Marx's thinking exerted a powerful
influence on the worldwide projection of European modernity.
Combining with the most widespread cultures of the five continents, he influenced social life, political events and the mentality of many millions of people, making a decisive contribution to shaping the world we live in. Marx's fortune in Italy featured an original and highly intense interaction with the nation’s history. From an unusual but effective angle, the presence of Marxism helped to outline Italy’s autobiography after the country’s Unification.
From the first spread of Marxist theory in the nineteenth century to the original work of authors such as Labriola, Gramsci and Togliatti, and on up to the editions and interpretations of the second half of the twentieth century, comparison with the work of Marx represented a decisive step in the formative process of Italian culture.
The volume records the proceedings of the conference organised in Rome by the Gramsci Foundation and the Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Marx. The convention aimed to reconstruct when and how Marx arrived in Italian culture, and which aspects of his thinking spread the most widely. The contributions are published in three sections – The
Circulation of Thought, The Interpretations, and The Influences
    – which retrace the impact of Marx on Italian culture in the period between the Eighteen-eighties and the end of the Twentieth century.
