For the first time, the book reconstructs the diffusion of Pinocchio around the world and the international 'fortune' that the story of the puppet and its protagonist have met with, from its publication in book form (1883) to the present day. Divided into 96 chapters and embellished with six rich iconographic paths, the Atlas recounts the long journey of a book that today continues to speak to readers with different cultures, languages, religions and traditions. The focus of the volume is on the complete translations of Collodi's book, but there are many references to the presence of Pinocchio in the collective imagination and in the social and cultural life of peoples, the television and film versions, the illustrations that have accompanied the various editions and the theatrical adaptations. From the European Pinocchio to the Asian one, from the 'black' puppet of many of the work’s translations into the African languages to the character that moves between North America, Latin America and Oceania, the Atlas traces the history and geography of a literary text that has known (and continues to know) no boundaries, among translations faithful to the original, adapted versions, rewritings, and abridged versions. The Pinocchio Atlas presents itself as a true critical and historiographical enterprise, capable of recounting a book that originated in Italy but has penetrated - like no other literary text - every corner of the planet; an enterprise made possible by the collaboration of more than 140 scholars. Its arrival in bookshops, ideally joins two important anniversaries: the 140th anniversary of the first volume edition of Pinocchio (2023) and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Carlo Collodi (2026).

Author Biography:
The research project that has led today to the publication of the Pinocchio Atlas was promoted three years ago by the University for Foreigners of Perugia, the Carlo Collodi National Foundation and the Uniser Foundation of Pistoia, in collaboration with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani. Edited by Giovanni Capecchi, Professor of Italian Literature at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, and supervised by a Scientific Committee composed of Veronica Bonanni, Alberto Casadei and Mario Casari, the volume saw the collaboration of an international research group of over one hundred and forty scholars and experts, each focusing on their own geographical and linguistic area of competence. The pieces that each one of them has managed to place go to make up a mosaic that has the entire planet as its horizon. This does not mean that the Atlas solves the questions about the diffusion of Pinocchio around the world: in fact, further studies and updates of the proposed scenario will be necessary. The Atlas, from this point of view, is in fact intended to be a stimulus for further research and new translations. But due to the wealth of information and material it offers, as well as the geographical scope of its realm, the Atlas is the book that has been lacking until now.
