Geo-politica pop

From the growing popularity of Turkish soap operas to the relationship between Peppa Pig and Brexit, and from the impact of Eurovision on the Ukrainian conflict to K-pop band members enlisting in the military as nuclear tensions escalate between North and South Korea: by analysing issues that may seem trivial, this book reveals that we often do not realise the geopolitical implications of what we see or read in the media every day. In each chapter, the author analyses a different cultural phenomenon occurring in all continents, and uncovers the interconnections between popular culture and international balances by telling some truly astonishing stories. His approach, which is clearly multidisciplinary, draws from semiotics, sociology, and cultural studies, as well as from the roots of geopolitical discourse, international relations, human geography, and strategic studies. It has a dual purpose: to provide a large audience with new tools to gain a better understanding of what is going on in the world while helping to clearly define the scope of a field of study which, for several years now, has been gaining increasing attention outside of Italy, namely, popular geopolitics or pop geopolitics.
