Gramsci Scritti 1910-1926(1918) Tomo 3

The volume, edited by Leonardo Rapone and Maria Luisa Righi, brings together with great philological accuracy Gramsci’s writings published in 1918 and identified to date. It includes articles whose publication was forbidden by the censorship review boards and whose proofs have been preserved by restoring, where possible, the censored paragraphs within articles accepted for publication. All the texts are taken from Gramsci’s work as editor of the socialist press in Turin, an activity he undertook in 1918 on the pages of two newspapers: ‘Il Grido del popolo’, the weekly newspaper of the socialists of the province of Turin, and ‘Avanti!’, the daily newspaper of the Italian Socialist Party, which was directed by Giacinto Menotti Serrati at the time. It contains 348 texts that vary in length, from short articles to those that could be considered short essays. Of these, 52 are critical notes on performances that, with one exception, appeared in the ‘Teatri’ (Theatres) column that was regularly published in ‘Cronache torinesi’ and later in the Piedmont edition of ‘Avanti!’. Only four of these articles bear Gramsci’s signature at the bottom, while thirteen are initialled A.G. Four articles are signed with pseudonyms that differ from those Gramsci had used in previous years. Nevertheless, these can be attributed to him as he was undoubtedly the author, given the consistency of style. As is customary, the examination of the texts in question involved a meticulous analysis of the anonymous texts, which resulted in the exclusion of certain articles and the inclusion of new ones.
