Possible Psychoencyclopedia, Knowledge is Confusion, Catalogue

An imposing and complex project, begun by Gianfranco Baruchello in 2017 and concluded in 2020, the Psicoenciclopedia possibile (Possible Psychoencyclopaedia) carries out – in a book, commissioned and published by the Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana (Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia) – a sort of deconstruction of the entire encyclopaedic system. In 816 pages, Baruchello creates a complicated system that connects 1,200 items (in the first part of the volume) and 200 tables of images (in the second part) through original and unexpected adjacencies. The ideas and objects come from published and unpublished writings, notes and transcriptions of dreams, and the images are collected patiently through a long process of selection and editing from many different sources. Baruchello is therefore putting to the test (this time in a book) the organisational systems of seeing and knowing (i.e. causes, effects, narrative sequences or connections). As in all his works, including paintings, objects or installations, the Encyclopaedia too dismantles the safest and most normalised concatenations in order to venture into the uncertain, into the possible, into the "pleasure of thinking", through a combinatorial art that welcomes both different or insignificant aspects.
