The History

The history of the Castelli company goes back to 1887, when Ettore Castelli opens a cabinet-maker’s shop in Bologna, laying the foundations for what is now a leading company in the field of “Made in Italy” fine craftsmanship. That art of know-how linked to tradition, which has characterised the project since the beginning, is also passed on to the Anonima Castelli from the 1970s onwards.

After almost 100 years Plia is born, the chair that marks the transition from an artisan workshop to a large industrial company. After 100 years, the Castelli family is still at the helm of the company. Together with Paolo, Ettore’s great-grandson, they have also acquired Domodinamica, which features exclusive products created in collaboration with some of the most prominent designers in the history of Italian design. This is the beginning of a story that continues to this day, made up of major public and private projects, such as those in the naval and hospitality sectors, office and museum furnishings and a sophisticated collection of furniture and lighting with which, every year, it participates in the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Euroluce, Imm Cologne and the Shanghai Furniture Exhibition. Still today, the company is one of the leaders in Italian design and furniture, creating custom-made projects for the most prestigious customers.

In 2012, it presents an elegant Collection at the Salone del Mobile, in which objects with a unique design pay tribute to the great masters of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s while adapting to contemporary taste. Some of its prestigious collaborations include the one with Istituzione Bologna Musei in 2020 to design the capsule collection Objets d’Auteur: Homage to Morandi, a series of furnishing accessories with a poetic flair, which enhance living spaces with a lyrical look inspired by the great Bolognese master.
