The volume dedicated to the Vittoriale expresses its beauty and grandeur through the art of photography, thanks to over one hundred photos taken exclusively for Treccani by Aurelio Amendola. The Vittoriale degli Italiani is a complex of buildings, streets, squares, an open-air theatre, gardens and waterways erected between 1921 and 1938, built in Gardone Riviera on the shores of Lake Garda by Gabriele d'Annunzio with the help of the architect Giancarlo Maroni... dedicated to the "inimitable life" of the poet-soldier and the bravery of Italian troops during the First World War. The Vittoriale, donated by d'Annunzio to the "Italian people" in 1923, is today a foundation open to the public and visited annually by about 180,000 people.
