Author: Seidenberg, Mark. Translation by: Gianbruno Guerriero.

Why are literacy standards declining in various advanced countries – as confirmed by many international comparisons – and reading habits tending to return towards illiteracy? In addition to the socio-cultural context, says Mark Seidenberg, there is a deeper reason, involving the methods of teaching reading in schools, stuck in old and anachronistic theories. In recent years a new science has developed, still little known: using a close dialogue between linguistics, psychology and neuroscience this has made it possible to identify the basic mechanisms that regulate literacy, how it is acquired and what are the main causes of the problems that affect it. Making up for lost time is essential, because the existence of large sections of poorly educated youths damages society as a whole.
